Role: Levobupivacaine is an amide local anesthetic.

In vitro studies: Levobupivacaine is an amide-type local anesthetic.  Levobupivacaine works by blocking voltage-sensitive ion channels in neuronal  cell membranes to prevent the conduction of nerve impulses. By interfering with  the opening of sodium channels, a locally reversible anesthetic effect is  produced, which inhibits the conduction of nerve action potentials including  sensory, motor activity and sympathetic nerve activity.

In vivo study: Levobupivacaine and bupivacaine have similar nerve blocking  efficacy. Levobupivacaine inhibited motor muscle and pain response at a dose of  0.125%, with the maximum %MPE of 99 and 68, respectively, and inhibited the  duration of sciatic nerve block lagging motor muscle and pain response (60 and  30, respectively).
